How to do home disinfection?

Clean regularly

Cleaning with household cleaners that contain soap or detergent can reduce the number of bacteria on the surface and reduce the risk of surface infection. In most cases, cleaning alone will remove most of the virus particles on the surface. Unless someone in the home is sick or someone who has been positive for COVID-19 in the past 24 hours has stayed at home, disinfection may not be necessary to reduce the spread of COVID-19 at home.

When and how to clean the surfaces in the home

Clean the high-frequency contact surface regularly (for example, every day) and after a guest visits at home.

Focus on cleaning high-frequency contact surfaces, such as doorknobs, tables, handles, light switches, and work surfaces.

When the surface is visibly dirty or needed, clean other surfaces in the home. If someone in the home is prone to get sick from COVID-19, they should be cleaned more frequently. You can also choose to disinfect.

Follow the instructions on the product label to clean the surface with a product suitable for each surface.

Reduce surface contamination

Take measures at home to limit pollution caused by particles in the air or by contaminated hand contact surfaces.

Visitors who have not been vaccinated are required to wear masks.

Before inviting visitors to your home, please follow the guidelines for the full-dose vaccinated population.

Isolate people who are sick due to COVID-19.

Let everyone in the house wash their hands frequently, especially when returning from an activity.

How to clean and disinfect the house when someone is sick

In addition to cleaning, when someone in the home is sick or COVID-19 positive has stayed at home in the past 24 hours, the home must be disinfected. Disinfection can kill bacteria remaining on the surface and reduce the spread of bacteria. If you are caring for a COVID-19 patient, you can refer to the nursing staff for detailed instructions.

How to disinfect?

Always follow the instructions on the label.

There are product instructions and specific instructions for ensuring safety on the label. Keep the disinfectant out of the reach of children. Many products recommend using disinfectants to keep the surface moist for a period of time (see product label).

If the disinfectant product does not contain detergent (check the label to confirm), clean the obviously dirty surface with a household cleaner containing soap or detergent before disinfecting.

Use disinfectant products that are effective against COVID-19 listed on the Nexternal icon on the EPA list.

Read the label to make sure the product meets your needs.

If there is no product on the Nexternal icon on the EPA list, you can use a bleach solution as needed.

Wear gloves during cleaning

Depending on the cleaning or disinfection product used and whether there is a risk of splashing, additional personal protective equipment (such as eye protection) may be required.

Wash your hands often with soap and water for 20 seconds. Be sure to wash your hands immediately after taking off your disposable gloves.

If there is no soap and water, and the hands are not obviously dirty, you can use a hand sanitizer containing at least 60% alcohol. But if your hands are visibly dirty, be sure to wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.

Adequate ventilation should be ensured when using any disinfection products.
